Emergency Interim Housing (EIH) First Street

Veronica and her husband experienced an unimaginably difficult month of homelessness before HomeFirst stepped in to help. For Veronica (age 43), who suffers from sciatica, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, a fractured foot, and chronic asthma – some of which is caused by domestic violence in a past relationship - it was impossible for her to properly care for her health while living on the streets. This is why on a Friday afternoon, following a month of homelessness, she took matters into her own hands and reached out to the mayor’s office for help. His team got back to her quickly. They connected her with HomeFirst, and our staff were able to swiftly offer Veronica and her husband interim housing at our First Street site in San Jose.

Veronica and her husband stayed at First Street for just over two weeks. The couple already had a housing voucher, but they were waiting for a permanent apartment to become available for move in. In the meantime, First Street provided them with a safe place to sleep each night and three meals daily. Additionally, we were able to pay the couple’s security deposit for their new apartment, using First Street’s budget for financial assistance. This made it possible for them to secure the unit.

Veronica couldn't be more thrilled with their new home. The one-bedroom unit is spacious. It offers plenty of storage, a private patio, and a communal swimming pool that is available to everyone living in the housing complex. The apartment is also located next to public transportation, which enables them to get around the city.

HomeFirst was able to help with the move. We secured a new bed for the couple to take to their new space, and our team supplied an exit-to-housing kit filled with household essentials that were provided by our generous donors.

Veronica’s message is this: If you are experiencing homelessness and need help, reach out to HomeFirst. With support and personal determination, lots can change. As the couple settles into their new home, they look forward to hosting friends and family. Their first gathering will be a birthday dinner.
