RJ's Journey: Paws and Progress

"Living at Arena has allowed RJ to make significant progress towards self-sufficiency. He has worked with his case manager to renew his barbers license, is working to pay off his union dues so that he can book construction jobs, and his probation is coming to a close"

HomeFirst offers low-barrier housing services, meaning we eliminate as many hurdles to program entry as possible, while maintaining safety and comfort for those we serve. By allowing people to live alongside their dogs, cats, and other pets, we ensure that no one is forced to choose between an important member of their family and having a roof over their head. Some people decline services at programs that don’t welcome pets. At HomeFirst we aim to prevent this.

RJ is one of our many program participants who benefits from our pet-friendly housing sites. He lives at our interim housing site, Arena, with his small Chihuahua mix, who he speaks of with pride. RJ believes that his dog has saved his life and says she has taught him what the phrase “That’s my dog” really means. Their companionship is strong.

RJ has been able to access veterinary services kindly offered by various organizations at the resource fairs held at Arena. Additionally, he has access to pet food, collars, leashes, and toys, which are provided by our generous donors. As such, RJ has ensured that his dog stays healthy and cared for, and even a little bit spoiled.

Living at Arena has allowed RJ to make significant progress towards self-sufficiency. He has worked with his case manager to renew his barbers license, is working to pay off his union dues so that he can book construction jobs, and his probation is coming to a close. RJ is hoping to find work and secure permanent housing. He has a clear vision for his future and is actively working to obtain it.

Living at Arena has given RJ the stability he needed to focus on his life goals, and having his dog by his side has made the journey even more meaningful. At HomeFirst, we know that removing barriers like pet restrictions helps people like RJ move forward, giving them the chance to rebuild their lives.
