Day of Service: HIF Renovations
HIF and Greystar Partner to Renovate HomeFirst's Boccardo Reception Center in San Jose: Day of Service Kicks off Phase 2 of Shelter Renovation
August 19, 2024
San Jose, CA – On August 22nd, the Housing Industry Foundation (HIF) in collaboration with Greystar, will host a transformative Day of Service at the Boccardo Reception Center (BRC) in San Jose. Operated by the nonprofit HomeFirst, the BRC is a critical shelter serving over 200 individuals experiencing homelessness. This event will mark the beginning of Phase 2 of a major renovation project - and gift from HIF to HomeFirst - aiming to enhance the shelter experience for those living at the site.
During the Day of Service, 30 dedicated volunteers from Greystar, a HIF board company and corporate sponsor, will lend their time and skills to paint the shelter’s sleeping area and cafeteria. Varsity Painting has generously donated the needed paint and supplies and will prepare the site for the volunteers' work.
“The Day of Service is more than a renovation; it's a symbol of our commitment to creating a welcoming and inspiring space for the people we serve,” said Elizabeth Macapanpan, HomeFirst’s Sr. Director of Facilities. “This collaborative effort [that the Day of Service and greater renovation require] is a shining example of what can be accomplished when the community comes together for a common cause.”
Phase 1 of the renovation, completed in 2023, included the installation of privacy panels on beds and the construction of entrance walls by the restrooms on the shelter floor. This work increased privacy for residents, which is always appreciated in a congregate living environment.
Phase 2 will feature new paint and a complete overhaul of the BRC lobby, including the addition of new offices and a bathroom, alongside upgrades to flooring, lighting, and furniture. The transformation will create a more welcoming and functional space for those living and working at the shelter. This renovation is made possible by Greystar, Varsity Painting, Severin Group, CAMP Facility Services, and Commercial Fire Protection.
“The craftsmanship and great spirit of giving that our donors in the multi-family housing industry provide, makes a real difference for so many community agencies each year,” said Steve Sullivan, HIF’s Executive Director. “We are proud to support HomeFirst and proud of our partnerships that are the backbone of HIF.”
Santa Clara County faces a significant housing crisis, with nearly 10,000 people experiencing homelessness. With so many people in need of housing and the recent Supreme Court ruling making it easier for local governments to clear encampments, more individuals may seek shelter in the coming months. In this changing landscape, it is more important than ever for shelter operators to create spaces that draw in those interested in the services they offer. Collaborating across organizations can help make these projects possible.
